NEW DELHI: The first day of the first Test between India and Bangladesh probably witnessed the rarest of the rare incident when Shreyas Iyer remained intact on the crease despite being bowled by Ebadot Hossain’s delivery.
In order to get the batsman dismissed, you need to have bails come off the groove but what happened in the 84th over of the Indian innings left players, commentators and crowds in splits and everyone was seen in disbelief.
Iyer was caught by Ebadot Hossain’s nip-backer that hit the stumps but the bails did not come off giving Indian batter a lucky escape towards the end of the day.
Coming to the match, Cheteshwar Pujara and Iyer led India’s remarkable fightback with their 149-run partnership for the fourth wicket as the visitors ended the day at 278/6.
Pujara (90) missed out on a century but Iyer remained on course for his hundred as he was unbeaten on 82.
Rishabh Pant’s counterattacking 45-ball 46 helped India stabilise the innings following early blows.
Axar Patel (14) was dismissed on the final ball of the day.
For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam (3/84) made the most impact with three wickets for 81 runs, while Khaled Ahmed (1/26) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (2/71) were also among wickets.
