Sunrisers Hyderabad smash highest total in IPL history, score 277 against Mumbai Indians

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad put up a remarkable batting display against Mumbai Indians, setting a new record for the highest total ever scored in an Indian Premier League match. They scored 277 runs for the loss of three wickets in their allotted 20 overs, surpassing the previous record of 263/5 set by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013 against Pune Warriors India.

The Mumbai Indians seemed to have misjudged their strategy against Sunrisers Hyderabad’s aggressive batting lineup. Despite possibly planning to save their ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah to counter Heinrich Klaasen’s power-hitting, they were caught off guard by Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma’s onslaught in the initial overs.

Travis Head, making his debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad, set the stage on fire by scoring a half-century in just 18 deliveries, breaking the record for the fastest fifty by a Sunrisers player. However, Abhishek Sharma surpassed this feat by reaching his fifty in just 16 balls, putting immense pressure on the Mumbai Indians bowlers.

The debutant South African pacer, Kwena Maphaka, had a tough outing, conceding 22 and 20 runs in his second and third overs respectively, as Head and Abhishek took advantage of his lack of experience. Despite the onslaught, Jasprit Bumrah was the only Mumbai Indians bowler who managed to keep things tight, although he remained wicketless, giving away 36 runs in his spell.

Travis Head’s aggressive innings of 62 runs off 24 balls, including nine fours and a six, left a significant impact, while Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting saw him smash seven sixes and three fours on his way to scoring 63 runs off just 23 deliveries.

After their dismissals, Heinrich Klaasen took over the charge, remaining unbeaten on 80 runs off 34 balls, comprising four fours and seven sixes, as Sunrisers Hyderabad reached a massive total in Hyderabad.

The highest totals in IPL history are as follows:

  1. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 277/3 vs Mumbai Indians, 2024
  2. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 263/5 vs Pune Warriors India, 2013
  3. Lucknow Super Giants – 257/5 vs Punjab Kings, 2023
  4. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 248/3 vs Gujarat Lions, 2016
  5. Chennai Super Kings – 246/5 vs Rajasthan Royals, 2010
This breathtaking performance by Sunrisers Hyderabad is sure to be remembered as one of the most electrifying moments in IPL history.

Chasing first win

Sunrisers Hyderabad bounced back strongly after a close loss in their first game. They put up an impressive batting performance, attempting to chase down a huge target of 209 runs. However, despite a valiant effort, they fell short by just four runs. Heinrich Klaasen was the standout performer for Sunrisers, scoring a quickfire 63 runs from only 29 balls.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians also suffered a defeat in their opening match against Gujarat Titans last week.
