Indian ace Virat Kohli is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen to ever grace cricket and his record vindicates the claim.

Virat Kohli’s centuries in international cricket are the second-most by any player after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar who has 100. Kohli’s tons in ODIs is the record for the format.

Only three Indians have scored more three-digit scores in Test matches than Kohli.

In T20 internationals, however, Virat Kohli has scored only one century.

Overall, though, Virat Kohli has scored 10 centuries in T20 cricket. Barring his solitary T20I ton for the Indian men’s cricket team, he also boasts of nine more in the Indian Premier League (IPL) while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Virat Kohli’s first T20 century

Virat Kohli has been playing T20 cricket since 2007 while his India debut in the T20I format came only in 2010. However, it took the Delhi batter almost nine years to register his first ton in the format.

On April 24, 2016, Virat Kohli scored his maiden T20 century while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in the IPL. He slammed an unbeaten 100 off 63 balls in Rajkot albeit in a losing cause.

Previously, Kohli had come close to reaching three digits in the format twice. He was run out for 99 against Delhi Daredevils in a match during IPL 2013 and had remained unbeaten on 93 against Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier that same season.

He had also stayed unbeaten on 90 and 85 against Australia in two separate T20Is earlier in 2016. Just a month before his maiden ton against Gujarat Lions, he also scored an unbeaten 89 against the West Indies.

Virat Kohli’s IPL centuries

Virat Kohli’s maiden T20 ton against Gujarat Lions in IPL 2016 seemed to have opened the floodgates for the Indian ace, who notched up three more tons in the same campaign to finish as the tournament top scorer with 973 runs. The haul still stands as the record for the most runs scored in a single IPL season by any batter till date.

The ace batter also scored three centuries in IPL 2023 while his only other three-digit score in the competition, a 58-ball 100 vs Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, came in 2019.

Virat Kohli’s highest score in the IPL is an unbeaten 113 off 72 balls against Rajasthan Royals in 2023. He also registered the same score in 50 balls against Kings XI Punjab in 2016 but was dismissed.

After his triple ton in IPL 2023, Kohli had to wait three more years for his next 100. A match-winning unbeaten 105 off just 60 balls saw him drive RCB to victory against KKR.

Virat Kohli’s T20I century

Virat Kohli scored his only T20I century on September 8, 2022, while playing against Afghanistan in the T20 Asia Cup played in the UAE.

Opening the innings with KL Rahul in the Super Four contest at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Kohli hammered an unbeaten 122 off just 61 balls to power India past 200 and subsequently, a mammoth 101-run win. The knock was punctuated by 12 fours and six sixes.

Interestingly, his only T20I ton remains Virat Kohli’s highest score in T20 cricket as a whole and also his only ton in the shortest format on foreign soil.

Four of Virat Kohli’s 10 tons in T20s have been scored at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, unsurprisingly his IPL team RCB’s home ground.

The Delhi batter has also been either dismissed or has remained unbeaten in the 90s on several occasions in T20 cricket.
