Joe Root on Verge of Creating Historic Feat Against India

Veteran England batter Joe Root is on the brink of scripting history in Test cricket. The 34-year-old is just 73 runs away from becoming the first cricketer ever to score 3,000 Test runs against India—a milestone no player has reached in the history of the game.

Currently sitting on 2,927 runs in Tests against India, Root is well ahead of second-placed Ricky Ponting, underscoring his consistency and dominance over the Indian bowling attack through the years.

Chance to Break Sachin Tendulkar’s Record Too

Root is also closing in on another significant feat: most Test half-centuries. India’s legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar holds the record with 68 fifties. Root, currently tied at 66 with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, needs two more to draw level with Tendulkar, and three to surpass him.

Although it’s unlikely this particular record will fall in the second Test itself, Root has ample time in the ongoing five-match series to make it happen.

Rahul Dravid’s Catching Record in Danger

Root’s brilliance isn’t limited to batting. He’s also set to surpass Rahul Dravid’s record for most catches in Test cricket by a non-wicketkeeper. Both players currently have 210 Test catches, with Root claiming two in the first Test at Headingley to tie the record.

With four more Tests to play in the series, it’s only a matter of time before he claims the top spot.

Root’s Remarkable Test Record

Joe Root’s Test stats are a testament to his greatness:

  • Matches: 154
  • Runs: 13,087
  • Average: 50.92

He remains the highest run-scorer among active cricketers, and trails only Sachin Tendulkar (15,921 runs) on the all-time Test run chart. Root needs 2,834 more runs to surpass Tendulkar—a target that seems ambitious but not impossible if he continues his current form over the next couple of years.

Strong Start to India Series

Root made an impact right away in the ongoing India series, scoring an unbeaten half-century in the second innings of the first Test, helping England secure a five-wicket win.

As the Ben Stokes-led side eyes a strong start to the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, Root’s form and leadership with the bat will be absolutely critical.
